The autumn’s work begins with the never-ending job of clearing out ditches, to keep water flowing and prevent floods through the winter. One volunteer also dug out a pile of old ballast from beside the track, to be put to good use elsewhere. Here the old ballast is being washed ready for reuse. The works train testing out a section of track where rusted sleepers had just been replaced and re-ballasted. Work begins on the next section of lineside fence – from the old level crossing to the far end of the pond loop. A few days of hard work later and this section of new fence is all done. The old gate was welded up and repainted to complete the job. Always plenty of leaves, twigs and branches to clear following winter storms We love trains, but there’s always room for nature at the railway too – here some moss and Jelly Ear fungus are making a home on one of our log piles Taking a break from clearing ditches to watch the mist roll in along the river
