We have taken the decision that our September open day will be for members only. We only have a small volunteer group to run the railway, some of whom are in vulnerable categories or have vulnerable family at home, meaning that unfortunately we cannot open to the wider public this year. We thank you for your understanding, and hope to be back to running normally next year.
We are pleased to announce that we are starting to re-open the railway. Our first open day will be for members only, to say thank you for their continued support, and limit visitor numbers to a safe level to allow us to operate within current safety guidelines. We will review the situation following the members day and make a decision on whether or not we can open to the public in September. Please keep checking this website for updates. Thank you for your continued support and understanding.
As restrictions on public gatherings continue, our May and June open days have now been cancelled. We are still hopeful that we may be able to resume running at some point later in the year – please keep checking this website for updates. Thank you to all our members and friends, your continued understanding and support is greatly appreciated.

The Friends of the Thorpe Light Railway have been following the guidance from the Government and NHS on the Coronavirus. This week the guidance and direction from Government changed, in particular introducing the need to stop any non-essential travel and avoid social gatherings & crowded places. It also recommends that people who are vulnerable – including those who are elderly – will need to undertake even more drastic measures.
Following the change in guidance, the Friends have taken the responsible decision to pause planned workdays and cancel the 26th April running day. We will most likely cancel the 17th May running day as well. We understand that this will be a disappointment but is the only decision available to us during the current situation. We will be reviewing whether or not to go ahead with each planned future running day as the situation in the country evolves, and will keep our website updated with the latest information.
As a small charity, we value our loyal supporters, passengers and visitors and hope that travelling on and visiting the Thorpe Light Railway will be resumed in the not too distant future. We will of course be reviewing all our activities on a frequent basis to protect everyone involved with the Friends and to secure our long-term future.
We are sorry to have to make these changes. We hope you understand that the circumstances are beyond our control and the restrictions are very necessary at this challenging time.
